Welcome to Richmond, Northern Cape – a charming small town nestled on the N1 highway, midway between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and equidistant from the major Karoo towns of Colesberg and Beaufort West. Situated in the heart of the Great Karoo Desert, often touted as the world’s best-developed desert, Richmond Northern Cape serves as both the perfect stopover and a gateway to exploring the breathtaking wonders of the Karoo.

Richmond was founded in 1843 on the farm Driefontein and later named in honour of a Duke. This Karoo dorp is situated halfway between Cape Town and Johannesburg, approximately 350km from Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Port Elizabeth respectively and 130km from Graaff Reinet.

Richmond’s history boasts that it is the birthplace of the father of modern orthopaedics, home to one of only two museums in the world honour the saddle horse, and a site where the Boers fought each other during the last gentleman’s war. The ancient footprints in the koppies, wide open spaces and bright starry nights have been here for millenia.
